Fix Twitch Constant Buffering & Lag (Even on Good Internet)

Updated: 3/9/2026

You are watching a stream, and every 10 seconds, the video freezes and the loading circle spins. You check your speed testβ€”100Mbps. So why is Twitch lagging? This is rarely an issue with your download speed. It is usually a conflict with Twitch's 'Low Latency' player or a browser setting that is choking the video buffer.

Method 1: Disable Low Latency Mode

Low Latency Mode reduces the delay between you and the streamer, allowing you to chat in real-time. However, it leaves zero room for error. If your internet hiccups for 1 millisecond, the stream buffers.

Step 1: Settings

Click the Gear Icon on the video player.

Step 2: Advanced

Select Advanced. Look for Low Latency and toggle it OFF. This increases the delay by about 2-3 seconds but builds a massive buffer safety net.

Method 2: Force a Different DNS

Some ISPs throttle traffic specifically from Twitch servers. Switching to Google's phonebook bypasses the throttle.

Preferred DNS: 8.8.8.8 Alternate DNS: 8.8.4.4

Change this in your Windows Network Adapter settings (IPv4) or directly in your Router to fix it for all devices.

Method 3: Hardware Acceleration Check

If your CPU is old, decoding 1080p60 streams is hard work. Ensure your Graphics Card is doing the heavy lifting.

  • Chrome: Settings > System > Toggle 'Use graphics acceleration' ON.
  • Firefox: Settings > General > Performance > Uncheck 'Use recommended' > Check 'Use hardware acceleration'.
